Clearly Better Campaign
The Bancroft Hospital needs the communities help to replace its ultrasound and X-ray equipment.
The costs for this equipment is $195,000 and $510,000 respectively, and includes the cost of installation and modifications of the examination rooms.

This week I attended the Tudor/Cashel and Limerick council meetings.
Regarding the proposed Limerick By-Laws, there have been 70 changes made since the original draft. An updated draft should be posted on the Limerick township website soon. They hope to pass the new By-Law in May.
Regarding the Steenburg Lake South Road, both townships now seem to acknowledge that a good portion of this road is considered a boundary road. As a result, the townships will need to jointly come to an agreement, and possibly draft a By-Law for that portion of the road.
Other news worth mentioning;
i) there are plans to open a McDonald's restaurant in Madoc around the intersection of Hwy 7 & Hwy 62.
ii) the Grimsthorpe waste disposal site (which is one of two serving Tudor/Cashel) has an estimated life expectancy of approximately 2.5 years.
This will result in significant costs to the township to allow for future capacity. It was also noted that the Per Person Utilization of that site may be up to 3x higher than the expected norm.
Everyone should remember to recycle, and keep your personal waste to a minimum.

This weekend the last of the ice has melted from the lake. Just another benefit of global warming.
So spring is officially here, and it is time to come out of hybernation. Just in time for the Cottage Life show :)
For those who have been following the politics in our townships, Limerick has posted the latest revisions to their proposed by-laws on their website www.township.limerick.on.ca
The SLCA is working towards getting an updated progress report on the new by-laws, and the township activities relating to the services provided to the south road.

I woke up this morning and discovered that Holloween is right around the corner. Could I possibly have missed Thanksgiving. Did I even remember to shut down the cottage.
Limerick Township will be celebrating thier 125th anniversary next year.
Summer is almost over. I hope everyone enjoyed the lake, the SLCA events, and everything this great region has to offer.
I hope everyone enjoyed the Fun Run and the Jamboree this weekend. It was a perfect season, with great weather and record turnouts at the events. A big thank you to Carolyn Dobson, the social committee, and to everyone who came out to assist and/or participate. Enjoy the rest of the summer.
FIRE BAN OVER: According the the Moose 97.7 FM, the recent rainfall has resulted in the the Fire Ban for Hasting County
to be cancelled. However, until we receive official notification from the Limerick Fire Department, our fire warning remains at an extreme level.

Internet is here at last. After a long wait, the new Bell tower at Jordan Lake is now operational. This means there is a much better chance of getting a usable cellular and high-speed Internet service on Steenburg Lake.

It was a day full of meetings for me yesterday, as I joined several of our members who attended the council meetings of Limerick and Tudor/Cashel townships.
On behalf of our members, I addressed both of these council with regards to our current concerns, namely;
i) the proposed By-Law changes [Limerick], and
ii) the road maintenance of Steenburg Lake South Road [Limerick & Tudor/Cashel].
Limerick By-Law Update
Some progress was made at Limerick Township regarding the proposed By-Laws, with the target date for passing the new By-Law now extended to March 6, 2012. A nice move brought forward by Councillor Clark Young who is clearly listening to his ratepayers.
Furthermore, a resolution was passed allowing anyone with specific concerns about the new By-Laws to be allowed to document and be heard by Limerick township for a period of one-year following the passing of the proposed By-Laws.
South Road Update
The SLCA made a decision to investigate our members desire for winter maintenance this September, following concerns about liability that was directed to our Limerick members on that road.
...regarding liability...
Since initiating action, Tudor/Cashel and Limerick townships have had a joint meeting to discuss this issue on November 21st.
I am happy to report that Tudor/Cashel council advised the SLCA yesterday that their township does NOT require their ratepayers to insure themselves against liability for winter mainteance services that are being privately contracted on their road.
In the case of private contractors, the operator is simply required to have proof of insurance with documentation specifying the township road that is being serviced.
We welcome Tudor/Cashel's reasonable approach to this issue, and we will continue to request that Limerick township reconsider their position on this matter.
...regarding winter maintenance...
We have been busy compiling data over that past couple months, and I've personally contacted many of our Limerick members on this road regarding this issue.
I was pleasantly surprised that it is reasonable to request that Limerick township provide winter maintenace for that road, according to the numbers (population/value/tax contribution/rank).
Based on your feedback, the SLCA has initiated action requesting winter maintenance from Limerick Township.
A completed road study report was delivered to council on November 17th, and the business case was reviewed at their council meeting yesterday.
Although the councillors did not take any immediate action, they appear open to working with the SLCA to understand these details, and work with Tudor/Cashel, if required.
In a rather surprising (and not entirely unrelated) move, Limerick township took the opportunity to pass a motion that granted the remaining portion of Robinson Lake Road with winter maintenance service, citing an oversight in their Mainteance Standard By-laws of 2008.
Ironically the recipients of this motion where not in attendance and may have never requested this service. Yet it should be noted that this oversight i) has fewer properties, ii) has lower average property values, and iii) provides significantly less tax contribution (about $22k/year less) than our Steenburg Lake South Road and East Bay road ratepayers in Limerick township.
Nonetheless, based on our data, this action leaves Steenburg Lake South Road, East Bay Road, and Nicholson Lane to stand alone as the only populated township roads (class 6-2) that are NOT receiving winter maintenance service from Limerick Township.
With the support of our members, the SLCA will continue to work with the townships to understand their justification for this denial of service, in hopes of acheiving some form of resolution as soon as possible.

Things have a way of getting very busy this time of year, and I hope everyone has survived the transition into the 'off-season'.
The SLCA is busy working on the Fall Newsletter, and you should see it shortly.
I finally got around to posting the list of winners for our 2011 Events on the website.
We've also updated the website to show our 2012 events. It should be another great year.
On October 1st, the McGeachie Trails officially opened a new 3 Kms of trails on the 500 acre conservation area. There were 25 people at the opening event, and the trails will be perfect for hiking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
Fantastic work by Dave Golem who designed the trail, and all the volunteers who made it a reality. A map has been posted in the General Information section of the website.

This Sunday, July 23rd is that last day to vote online for pictures taken during the 2010 Photo Contest. Final ballots and winners will be announced during the Annual General Meeting next Sunday July 31st.
FIRE BAN: Please be aware of the fire ban that is in place now, and until further notice. This means all outdoor burning is illegal and you can face serious fines, or worse, including liability for any damages caused as a result of your fire. Of course, the ban includes campfires and fireworks. Please play safely.

** BASS SEASON OPENS OF THE FORTH SUNDAY IN JUNE **
That's June 25th on this year' s calendar.
Until then, PLEASE DON'T fish near the shores! Instead, fish for Splake out in the deep.
The male bass uses his tail to make a nest in clear water near the shores of our lake.
After attracting and fertilizing the females eggs, his main duty for the next three weeks is to keep that home clean and safe.
The male bass is responsible for watching over his school of offspring.
He'll stay close and protect the eggs from harm until they hatch a few days later.
After hatching, the young spawn will spend about two weeks growing and learning what to eat.
If the male Bass is forced to strike against a bait (out of defence for his nest), he is likely to become disoriented and permanently leave the nest undefended from the local perch, rock bass, sun fish and crayfish.
If you fish the shorelines before June 25th, you could be responsible for significantly reducing the future Bass population in our lake.
Moral of the story: Don't fish near the shore until the last weekend in June. Give the male bass a chance to do his job.
Please refer to the Ontario Fishing Regulations, and make sure to invite me to the fish fry.

As we all start to spend more time in the country, our fire chief would like to remind us about safe wildfire practices.
The fine fuels are completed cured and could cause problems.
In a few short weeks things will begin to green up and the potential for wild fires will decrease.
I would also like to remind everyone that Day Burning regulations are in effect, so their is no day burning permitted between 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM.
Having said that, now is a perfect time to wish everyone a safe and happy 2011 cottaging season. See you at the lake.

***Bancroft OPP apprehend suspects of Nov/Dec Crime Spree on Steenburg Lake***
Two males were arrested for stolen property, and the investigation revealed that they were involved with several break-in and thefts on Steenburg lake.
A 17 year old male from Limerick Township has been charged with:
• Possession of a schedule 1 substance, contrary to the Controlled Drug and Substance Act.
• Possession of property obtained by crime, contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.
• Theft under, contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.
• Break, enter and commit (4 counts), contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.
• Break and enter with intent (4counts), contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.
• Breach of Probation, contrary to the Youth Criminal Justice Act
He is in custody and is scheduled to appear in Belleville bail court on Feb. 22, 2011.
The other 17 year old male, also of Limerick, was charged with:
• Possession of property obtained by crime, contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.
• Theft under, contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.
• Break, enter and commit (4 counts), contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.
• Break and enter with intent, contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.
He was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in Bancroft youth court on the April 21, 2011.
The SLCA would like to thank the Bancroft OPP for their continued efforts in keeping our community safe, and once again proving that crime doesn't pay.
