WAY TO GO ERIKA!

After a fantastic performance at the Wakeboarding Nationals last August, where Erika won GOLD in the Women's Rails and Silver in the Open Expressions, this month she took on the rest of the world.

Congratulations to Erika Langman, who placed 9th at the 2012 World Cable Wakeboard Championships in Manila.

The Blue-Green Algae in the marsh around Steenburg Lake has been reported as NON-TOXIC.

Today, we received the good news from the Ministry of the Environment (MOE).

We are also hoping that the Blue Green Algae does not bloom again next year, but the SLCA will continue to observe the area.

If any of our members see a problem in that marsh, or in other waters around our lake, please let us know.

ALERT: The SLCA has received the following notice from the Ministry of the Environment

Hi all,

Please be advised that the instrument in the ELISA lab (which would determine microcystin levels) is broken so there may be a delay in getting the results. The Lab has previously confirmed the presence of blue-green algae which may produce microcystins so please remain cautious. Thanks,

Laura Manning

ALERT: Limerick township has informed the SLCA that the preliminary results from testing conducted by the Ministry of the Environment of the swamp land next to Steenburg Lake South Road indicate a potentially rare form of Blue-Green Algae which could cause liver failure if ingested.

More testing is being performed, and additional test results are expected early next week.

The SLCA is working with the appropriate authorities to ensure prompt mitigation of this problem.

PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM THE AREA

For general information on blue-greens, please refer to the Ministry of the Environment’s website at www.ontario.ca/environment and the direct links to three fact sheets are the following:

BE ADVISED: The SLCA has notified the Ministry of the Environment and Limerick Township about a potential toxic development in the swamp land bordering Steenburg Lake South Road near East Bay Road.

The Limerick Roads Department installed a silt fence across the mouth of the culvery at the lower end of the swamp, and the health department will be conducting tests.

Although the material is not currently entering the lake, it is possible that this may be Blue-Green Algae.

WARNING:The chemicals produced by Blue-Green Algae are fairly toxic, and in particular could cause kidney damage and skin irritation, so it is advisable to avoid all contact and certainly avoid ingesting water contaminated with the toxins.

Wishing all Canadians a happy Thanksgiving weekend, and a great Columbus day to our friends from south of the border.

I'm hoping everyone enjoyed the 2012 cottaging season as much as I did, and I'm looking forward to the fall country colours and activities in the weeks ahead.

For those members on the south road who recently signed the road petition, I'm happy to report that both townships have agreed to participate in a joint advisory sub-committee that will review the maintenance entitlement of that road.

The SLCA would like to thank a couple of good samaritans, Tom & Matt McCarthy, for their efforts protecting one of our greatest treasures of Summmer 2012.

This summer, we've watched the birth and development of the two baby loons that shared our lake.

On the weekend of August 18th, Tom & Matt came to the rescue of one of the loons that was in obvious distress.

They removed a fishing hook from its foot, fishing line from around its neck & beak, and they cut the fishing line it had swallowed.

Once it was freed, the chick was released back to its home on our lake.

As of the Labour Day weekend both chicks appear to be developing normally and have been enjoying the lake with their parents.

Without the effort of Tom & Matt, we would have a noticeable scar on an otherwise perfect summer. Thanks guys.

We hope everyone had a great time at the Fun Run last saturday. The weather held out long enough to make for a great day.
Thank you to all those you helped organize this years events, and to everyone who came out to enjoy them.

And although we haven't received official notification from the Limerick Fire Department, Bancroft Fire Chief Pat Hoover reported that the Fire Ban in North Hastings has been lifted.

Despite the change in weather, there is still plenty of summer left to enjoy.

A perfect day for a fantastic event. Thanks to Carolyn Dobson and the Social team for a wonderful day at the beach. An experience of big smiles, loud laughs and good times that can be joyfully stored in our memories forever.

Get out there and enjoy the lake, but please be mindful of our newest guests, the baby loons. There are some great Loon pictures available in the photos section, thanks to photos contributed by Marlene Pollard & Patrice Schad.

This week I attended the Tudor/Cashel and Limerick council meetings.

Regarding the proposed Limerick By-Laws, there have been 70 changes made since the original draft. An updated draft should be posted on the Limerick township website soon. They hope to pass the new By-Law in May.

Regarding the Steenburg Lake South Road, both townships now seem to acknowledge that a good portion of this road is considered a boundary road. As a result, the townships will need to jointly come to an agreement, and possibly draft a By-Law for that portion of the road.

Other news worth mentioning;

i) there are plans to open a McDonald's restaurant in Madoc around the intersection of Hwy 7 & Hwy 62.

ii) the Grimsthorpe waste disposal site (which is one of two serving Tudor/Cashel) has an estimated life expectancy of approximately 2.5 years. This will result in significant costs to the township to allow for future capacity. It was also noted that the Per Person Utilization of that site may be up to 3x higher than the expected norm. Everyone should remember to recycle, and keep your personal waste to a minimum.

The SLCA would like to wish everyone a Happy and Safe Easter!. We will see you all again soon.

This weekend the last of the ice has melted from the lake. Just another benefit of global warming.
So spring is officially here, and it is time to come out of hybernation. Just in time for the Cottage Life show :)

For those who have been following the politics in our townships, Limerick has posted the latest revisions to their proposed by-laws on their website www.township.limerick.on.ca

The SLCA is working towards getting an updated progress report on the new by-laws, and the township activities relating to the services provided to the south road.

The spring newsletter will soon be assembled, so if you have any articles or information you want to share, please contact us.
