December 10, 2013

Despite the colder weather, it is hard not to feel all warm inside as we approach the final stretch leading into the holiday season, and into the New Year.

My updates to the website have been rare over the past few months, and that is largely because I haven't had anything nice to say.

It is, however, important that I communicate the bad news to the residents of the South Road regarding their request for township assistance with winter maintenance.

After a two year effort of pulling both townships together in sub-committee meetings, and compiling the necessarily data in support of what should be a reasonable request, the townships have decided to side together and maintain the status quo. The financial impact of the request was estimated at $750/year per township for the boundary portion of the road, in return for the $250,000+/year paid in property tax by those ratepayers.

This news is most unsettling for those on the south road who signed the petition in 2011/12, but it should also be a concern to every lakefront property owner who feels the pain of the predictable double-digit tax increases without any chance of receiving the services or representation expected from the community you are supporting. And while it is easy to blame the townships for overlooking our seasonal and recreational existence in the area, we can be far more effective by working together to meet mutual goals.

The SLCA remains willing and able to respresent its members to the best of our abilities, and we urge you all to remain engaged with us.

Most of all, we wish you a happy holiday and a prosperous new year. We look forward to celebrating 2014 with you all.

WOW, Summer is over. Happy (belated) Thanksgiving Everyone.

Please don't mistake our silence over the past 2 months for lack of activity. It has been a very busy time for the SLCA.

Since our last update, we've had meetings with the townships on various issues, and we've gathered for our 2013 Fall Executive meeting.

We are diligently working on the fall newsletter, so please feel free to submit any last minute submissions before November.

The Photo Contest is closed, and winners will be announced shortly. Thank you to everyone who participated.

Those on the South Road will be happy to learn that we successfully lobbied(forced) the townships to re-unite the sub-committee for a final meeting to present options to the councilors. A FINAL DECISION from their perspective is expected in November.

And as we settle into the winter months, our pocket books can take a break from our seasonal bing as we patiently await the start of a new year.

The arrival of 2014 will host a full calendar of social events, leading into the big bang of the municipal election in the fall.

We have so much to look forward to. It doesn't get any better than this..

Warm wishes from the SLCA.

With a very successful Fun Run last saturday, that wraps up our events for 2013. A big thank you to all the event organizers and volunteers who have made our summer so special.

The SLCA is also happy to introduce Donna Cochrane to the executive team as our new Social Director.
Look out for 2014, here we come again.

July 15th, 2013

Another great weather weekend, perfectly matched for our Annual Regatta & BBQ.

A big thank you to the Anderson family for hosting the event, and all the volunteers that came together to make this event happen. The winners will be announced at our August 4th Annual General Meeting, and posted in our fall newsletter.

The SLCA would like to extend a special Thank You to our newest sponsor, Eric Huygens of Ontario Tree Care, for bringing us a BBQ, and providing us with the coals & assistance at the grill.

And we also are thankful to the Limerick Township for allowing us to use their BBQ for the event.

Sunday was another beautiful day, and we sincerely appreciated everyone who went out for the Road Clean-Up.
We know that it is often the same members who go out year after year, but we'd like to think that everyone is aware of importance of keeping our community clean, and makes an effort to contribute throughout the year.

Don't forget about the unveiling of the new sign at McGeachie Trail next Saturday, between 10am-2pm.

And a quick note for our South Road members --- IT IS TIME TO SPEAK UP

The usual group of representatives attended the Limerick Road & Council meetings last week, and we were able to work with Limerick Township to have a counter-proposal sent to Tudor/Cashel.
You can read the proposal from Limerick Township by clicking here.

IF YOU HAVE PROPERTY ON SOUTH ROAD, YOU ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO CONTACT THE TOWNSHIP AND LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD NOW, BEFORE THEIR AUGUST COUNCIL MEETINGS.

Please do NOT assume that the SLCA can represent your best interest and property value simply because you signed a petition last year.

For Tudor/Cashel Township contact the Clerk at 613-474-2583, Fax: 613-474-0664 E-mail: clerk@tudorandcashel.com
For Limerick contact the Clerk at 613-474-2863 Fax: 613-474-0478 E-mail: clerk@township.limerick.on.ca

Please feel free to copy the President@Steenburglake.com on any township correspondence.
I hope to hear some feedback from our members at the AGM.

It was a great performance by the Claidmor on Saturday, with about 28 boats by my count. A big thank you to the Cotie family for hosting that event.

And now it is already time for the Annual Regatta & BBQ.
Come out this Saturday, July 13th at 11am for a fun day of events at the beach, following by a BBQ.

The Annual Road Clean Up will be on Sunday at 9:30am, so please take some time to help keep our community clean.

But wait, there's more....

The Crowe Valley Conservation Authority has just announced the Unveiling of the new McGeachie Conservation Area sign.
The celebration will take place the following Saturday, July 20, 2013, starting at 10:00 am until 2:00 pm.
The unveiling will take place at 11:00 am and will follow with a free barbeque.

Come on out and discover ecological features such as forests, wetlands, rivers, streams and lakes. Enjoy the natural features that keep us healthy and happy.

South Road Winter Maintenance Update

Limerick Township will be reviewing a proposal from Tudor/Cashel township that would provide for Winter Maintenance of the boundary portion of Steenburg Lake South Road.

These meetings are an important next step to continuing the conversation, and achieving a mutually acceptable solution to winter maintenance.

If you have an interest in this topic, you are encouraged to attend these meetings.

Location: Limerick Community Centre on Hwy620

Monday, July 8th at 10am - Road Committee Meeting
Tuesday, July 9th at 7pm - Limerick Council Meeting

The letter of proposal is here: www.steenburglake.com/TudorCashel South Road Maintenance Proposal July 2013.pdf

Hoping everyone had a fantastic Canada Day long weekend.

A special thank you to the Cochrane family for hosting another fantastic Firework event.

And a great big thank you to Dave & Margaret Anderson for volunteering to host the Regatta this year. We are still working out the details of the BBQ, but we are happy to announce that the main event will go on as scheduled.

Happily, the lake is slowly starting to return to a (lower) seasonal level now that Crowe Valley has addressed a persistent beaver dam that was obstructing the flow.

Now if we could only get the weather and our taxes under control, we'll be all set.

The North Hastings Economic Development Committee is interested in the opinions of our seasonal residents, so please take the time to fill out their survey https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/HCSeasonalResSurvey

Assistance Needed

An important reminder that the SLCA is still looking for a volunteer to lead our annual Regatta, which is scheduled for July 13th, 2013.

The task requested is to help organize the activities leading up to the event, and oversee the competitions during the Regatta.

This event has been an important gathering place for our many families of Steenburg Lake, and we hope to able to move forward with this event as planned.

Kindly contact me over email Anthony.Genovese@steenburglake.com or by phone (613)474-1154 if you are considering volunteering your time, or need more information.

Spring Update

Finally, spring weather has arrived, and the lake is waiting for everyone's attendance. The Black Flies are getting hungry, so please don't keep them waiting.

The transition into spring was brutual, with neighbouring water levels at record highs and flooding around the Bancroft area. Fortunately, Steenburg Lake was largely spared, and hopefully our seasonal members will find thier property exactly as they left it last fall.

The spring newsletter will be published shortly, and the Victoria Day long weekend is just around the corner.

For those planning a visit in the weeks ahead, I would encourage you to visit and shop locally within our community. As the region enters the recovery phase following the flooding, these businesses will appreciate our business and generous support. You may also be interested in visiting the Grand Opening of Tinhouse Woodworking on May 18th between 11am-2pm (2358 - Hwy620) where you will find custom goods and one-of-a-kind furniture made of reclaimed and/or locally harvested woods, www.tinhousewoodworking.com.

And if your family is unable to use your cottage every week througout the year, why not consider making a big difference for one of the many families affected by cancer by donating the use of your place to the cottage dreams program, www.cottagedreams.ca.

Limerick Township has also made us aware of a couple of events throughout the summer, with a senior's showcase and information fair on Friday, June14th, in the township of Faraday, and a pig roast and silent auction at the Limerick Community Centre on July 27, hosted by the Limerick Friends Club and the Fire Department Auxiliary. All proceeds of Pig Roast & Auction will be donated to our Limerick fire department, and put towards the purchase a 4 wheeler and rescue sled for times when either a fire truck or an ambulance are not able to get to the scene.

So what are you waiting for? Pack up the family, throw the dog in the car, and get over here!

Wait, I have one final important request:We are looking for a volunteer to help organize & manage the 2013 Regatta on Saturday, July 13th. If you can help out the SLCA, please contact us so that we aren't forced to postpone, or cancel this fantastic event. Anthony.Genovese@steenburglake.com

April 2, 2013

Hoping that everyone had a great Easter weekend.

The cottage season is almost upon us, and although it is approaching slower than last year, it is sure to come.

The SLCA is busy preparing the spring newsletter, and we encourage everyone with stories, events, or other tidbits share them with us.

Meanwhile, for those who are venturing out to the lake during this unpredicatable weather, please be extra cautious around the ice & water.

If you are a property owner on the south road, there have been reports of significantly deteriorating road conditions, where these roads are now also being shared with commerical logging activity throughout the winter months and into the spring. As most of you are aware, we have been trying to work with the townships on this issue, regrettably without much success. If you have specific concerns about these roads, please contact your township.

February 13, 2013

It's almost Valentine's Day, and Family Day is right around the corner.

It's a great time to spend time with the family at the lake and enjoy some outdoor physical activities.

Speaking of activities, Limerick Township is conducting a survey to determine our interest in various programs from the Ontario Sport & Recreation Fund, such as Canoeing, Boating, Swimming, Hiking, Healthy Living and other Volunteer Programs.

Pleae take the time to participate in the survey which can be found here: http://www.township.limerick.on.ca/userfiles/file/Survey.pdf

And a congratulations goes out to Dave Golem for receiving the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in recognition of his significant contributions to the community.

All the best wishes from the SLCA for a great year.
